“Red Hood and the Outlaws, Part 1,”
by Scott Lobdell and artist Dexter Soy, takes us on a journey to
discover Black Mask (who Jason is after). In my last Red Hood review,
I stated that there should be a Red Hood movie in the works....well
that's Gotham, but his
part wasn't nearly what it could have been. In this issue, Black Mask
hires men to kill Ma Gunn, since she turned down his offer. Black
Mask, obviously, isn't happy with the no, but he's not successful in
killing her (thanks to Jason).
the same for Black Mask. We saw him in
When Jason finds out about the hit on
Ma Gunn, he goes after Black Mask. However, Black Mask is expecting
him and offers Jason to be his second in command. Jason accepts it,
wanting to get close to him and take him down. A classic way for an
undercover hero to get close to the villain. Even though Red Hood is
a hero, he doesn't play by the rules like Batman does, so he can
trick Black Mask and get close to him. Batman wouldn't be able to do
this, due to his hero status.
Before Red Hood steals cargo from a
train, for Black Mask, Black Mask kills the men who failed to kill Ma
Gunn in front of Jason, showing him exactly what he's capable
of....even though I'm pretty sure Jason knows exactly what Black Mask
is capable of. Jason crashes the train, allowing them to get the
cargo.....however, that doesn't happen because he's met with an
amazon woman, Artemis.....and that's how the issue ends (which leaves
us wanting to know more about this woman). Is Artemis after the
cargo? Was she on this train? Is she after Black Mask? We'll have to
find out in the next issue.
The Verdict: The more Red Hood
comics I read, the more I want a Red Hood movie. This issue now makes
me want a Red Hood/Black Mask comic. I'm also very curious to find
out more about Artemis in the next issue. I'm a big fan of strong
female characters and Artemis is definitely going to be one of those
characters.
