The Geekcap Roundup

Supergirl "Homecoming"

The DEO tracks Cadmus vehicles moving in the area, forcing Kara and J’onn to go after them. In one of the trucks, they find Jeremiah Danvers and return him home. After losing the use of his hand, he reveals that Cadmus is planning to set off a nuclear bomb using a residue from Kara’s heat vision. With the threat drawing closer, Jeremiah offers to rejoin the DEO to help the search. However, Mon-El has some reservations about Jeremiah, questioning his knowledge of a nuclear bomb. Kara initially rejects his concerns but begins questioning Jeremiah’s motives when Jeremiah begins searching through the electronic files of the agency. Nevertheless, Alex refuses to believe the worst of her father and lashes out at Kara for supposedly defending her new boyfriend.

When Kara, Alex, and Mon-El search for the bomb, Jeremiah then turns on J’onn to steal electronic files of the DEO for Cadmus. Though J’onn puts up a fight, Jeremiah reveals a cybernetic enhancement in his arm that wounds even the Martian Manhunter. He escapes with the information and rejoins with Hank Henshaw and Lillian outside the city. Kara and Alex arrive to stop him, but Henshaw detonates a bomb that destroys a train track, forcing Kara to rescue civilians. Alex corners Jeremiah but finds that she can’t shoot her father, letting him escape with the others. With Jeremiah loose and working for Cadmus, Kara and Alex both retreat to the comfort of Maggie and Mon-El respectively. Unfortunately, Winn informs the rest of the team that Jeremiah has stolen the National Alien Registry, giving them access to innocent alien civilians. Meanwhile, Lillian shows Jeremiah the latest step in their plan: a large spaceship.

Notes

  • Jeremiah also hints that Mon-El is not who he says he is.
  • Jeremiah receives a cybernetic implant, making him similar to the Cyborg Superman Hank Henshaw. This could be a reference to Dean Cain’s original role as Superman himself.
  • Kara rescues a train the same way Clark rescued a train in Superman.

The Flash "Attack on Central City"

While celebrating Valentine’s Day, Gypsy invades STAR Labs and begins attacking Barry. After the team captures her, she informs them that Grodd had taken control of her while searching for a breacher in Earth-2 and has forced her to bring him and an army of gorillas to Central City. Using Cisco’s powers, the team tries to determine Grodd’s next move in the future, but it only leads to Grodd, taking brief control of Joe, warning Barry of his threat to the city. With Joe as a connector, the group soon discovers Grodd’s plan to use a nuclear weapon to destroy the city. At the last instant, Barry just barely prevents the nuclear launch, but Grodd continues to lead an assault to the city. Meanwhile, Wally and Jesse inform Harry on Jesse’s move to Earth-1, though Harry informs Wally that he may not have much time left to warn him off.

Barry, Wally, and Jesse attempt to take on the army on their own, but they are quickly overwhelmed. Fortunately, with Gypsy’s help, Cisco brings Solovar to Earth-1 where he successfully takes down Grodd and regains control of the gorilla army. Though Solovar is determined to kill Grodd, Barry convinces him to let Grodd live in custody in ARGUS as the rest return to Gorilla City in Earth-2. With Grodd contained, Harry takes his own leave to Earth-2, finally giving his blessing to Wally and agreeing to let Jesse live on Earth-1. In celebration of the victory, Gypsy kisses Cisco before returning to her own world, and Barry proposes to Iris at their apartment. Afterwards, as Wally runs through the city, he has a vision of Savitar running past him.

Notes

  • HR references “the guy in green in Star City” when hanging up Cupid’s bow, a small reference to the Green Arrow.
  • Gypsy refers to Cisco “Luke Starkilling” her, a reference to Luke Skywalker’s original name in Star Wars.
  • There is a quick cameo by the Accelerated Man in Earth-19.

Arrow "Fighting Fire With Fire"

With the upcoming impeachment trial, Oliver relies on Chase to represent him in a hearing with the city council. While witnesses continue to testify against Oliver and Chase, Vigilante attacks the group, ultimately threatening Oliver’s life. Since Oliver is now personally targeted, the team begins a manhunt for Vigilante using part of his visor that Dinah found on the scene. Unknown to any of them, however, Prometheus fights against Vigilante and reveals that Prometheus is actually Chase. In the meantime, Felicity uses Pandora to find a way to persuade a potential councilperson, and Curtis works to enhance his T-spheres for the field while also trying to meet with Paul. Five years ago in Russia, Anatoli invokes a Bratva rule to briefly save himself and Oliver, giving Oliver time to find evidence on Kovar’s deal with Gregor.

Under the pressure of resignation, Oliver is convinced by Chase to ultimately denounce the Green Arrow as a murderer to save face with the council. The rest of the team successfully stops Vigilante with the help of the new T-spheres when he begins an attack during a press conference. After the conference, Oliver is cleared from resignation by the council, but Thea resigns her own position fearing diving too deep into politics. Unfortunately, for her use of Pandora, Felicity agrees to join a hacker group known as Helix, and Curtis’s meeting with Paul reveals Paul’s plans for a divorce. Back in Russia, Oliver finds proof of Gregor accepting a bribe from Kovar which turns the Bratva against Gregor. However, Kovar betrays Anatoli and open fires at the group. Back at Star City, Chase confronts a newly-hired Susan with a “life or death exclusive” and kidnaps her.

Notes

  • Adrian Chase is revealed to be Prometheus, though his comic-book counterpart was actually Vigilante.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer Review

By Jim Scroggs
December 6th, 2016
JHScroggs on Twitter and Instagram

I spent my Saturday doing two things. Watching College Football and anticipating the newest trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. Then, just as I suspected, Twitter let me know that it was time to see my favorite group of A-Holes take on the entire galaxy so let’s dive right in, shall we?

The trailer opens with some shots of a battle scene with Drax, Gamora as well as Star Lord fighting a giant squid like monster but this is Marvel and it’s in space so why not. While this is going on, there’s a voice over of Rocket explaining to someone how important the current situation is. That certain someone is Baby Groot and he’s just as adorable as we thought. Groot then seems to get what Rocket is saying but in typical Groot fashion, misses a key detail and almost ends it all. The sounds of "Fox on the Run" by Sweet ring out in this trailer and it fits oh so very well. There’s much more dialogue in this trailer compared to the last but Star Lord calls out some possible foes by calling them “A-Holes” which is very fitting for this franchise, Drax yelling “Screw You Spaceship” which is very literal of the destroyer and an exchange between Star Lord and Rocket that is the funniest exchange about tape that anyone probably will hear. The “Post Title” sequence scene is where we get a first look at Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff and her powers of telepathic communication. She touches StarLord’s arm and she feels that he’s got feelings for someone. He admits it at first but when she points out that those feelings are for Gamora, he back tracks hard in embarrassment. Drax immediately starts laughing and making fun of Peter but for some reason, Drax wants Mantis to try it on him but he says it with such joy, that you can’t help but laugh. The clear star of this trailer is Baby Groot. Baby Groot is seen running after a Ravager, I believe, he’s screaming in this tiny little voice, extends his arms to wrap around the Ravagers legs and throws him off the catwalk. The next time he’s seen, it looks to be a continuation of the “Tape” discussion and Groot picks up the button and runs off screaming” I Am Groot”.

I’m completely serious when I say this. I don’t need to see another another trailer for this movie. Out of all the Marvel Studios franchises, Guardians of the Galaxy is the one where I have the most faith. I heard a few comments worrying that the sequel wouldn't be as unique as the previous one but after seeing this, there's no way anyone can say that going forward. I know it’s going to be and adventure every time we see this group come together and I think that’s a testament to James Gunn and his team. The use of music, the visual effects, the writing and character beats are something that should be getting more respect but I’m just going to enjoy the ride on the Milano as we get more time with these great characters. Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” will be in theaters on May 2, 2017

Underrated Shows Everyone Should Watch

There are so many shows available now, it’s hard to figure out what to watch. Here are some shows that you might have heard of and definitely need to watch.

Eureka
Jack Carter is transporting a fugitive, which happens to be his daughter Zoe, when they stumble upon the town of Eureka. Eureka is not your normal small town; its population consists of super geniuses. Carter and Zoe, on the other hand, have average IQs. Since nobody is supposed to know that Eureka exists, Carter and Zoe have to start a new life in town.

The father/daughter dynamic that Carter and Zoe have is truly believable. They have their own inside jokes, and Carter interacts, or rather chastises, Zoe with such ease. As an only daughter, it definitely reminded me of my interactions with my father.

I also love the town’s personality. The setting totally acts as a character. Although everyone in town is super smart, sometimes (almost weekly), they make HUGE mistakes. Somehow Carter always find the very simple solution.

Hercules
We follow Hercules and his friend Iolaus through Greece as they help innocent people and deal with the gods. I love how this show introduces people to Greek mythology, as well as sprinkling other mythos in later seasons. I know, as a kid, this was my first memorable experience with mythology.

Hercules and Iolaus are a great example of the hero/sidekick trope. Hercules’ call to action is the murder of his entire family by Hera (not really a spoiler). Iolaus is Hercules’ childhood friend and would do anything for him, including travel the world and righting wrongs.

Xena
Xena, although a fictional character, shows incredible growth as a person. We are first introduced to her as a side character in Hercules, and she’s a villain. Not exactly what you’d expect from a female character in this time of TV (this show premiered in 1995), but it’s a refreshing surprise.

Xena and Gabrielle are the epitome of girl power. They show that women don’t need men to solve their problems, and they can defend themselves as well. Gabrielle, for example, was a quiet girl who didn’t know what the world offered. Once she was trained by the Amazons (again, not really a spoiler), she gained so much self-confidence.

Enterprise
Enterprise acts as a prequel to the original Star Trek series with Kirk. Here, Captain Archer and his crew are just barely exploring space, and we get introductions to some of our favorite alien races, as well as some brand-new ones.

I really enjoyed what each crew member brings to the table. T’Pol is the necessary logical character, a la Spock and Data. Hoshi is this version’s Uhura, and she gets even more screen time than our original communications officer. Dr. Phlox is one of the new races that we encounter, and I love that he acts as a sort of comedic relief. Just as a warning: this show was cancelled while the writers and producers were writing another season, so the ending is a bit hasty.

Psych
Shawn and his friend Gus want to get involved in some detective work, so instead of applying for a job at the police department, they make the most logical decision and open up a psychic detective agency.

This is definitely a comedy, but I love some of the nerdy Easter eggs hidden throughout the show. In every episode, a pineapple is hidden somewhere, and it’s quite a fun party game to try to find it. There have also been themed episodes throughout the series, such as the ever-necessary musical and an Alfred Hitchcock-themed show.

What underrated shows are must-sees to you?

Animal Crossing New Leaf: The Amiibos are here!

Pull out your 3DS and head over to the eshop! There’s a brand new expansion update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf! This free update adds oodles of new content to your existing town, as well as amplifies other classic AC features. After the update installs you’ll notice the menu logo has changed, but other than that the game looks pretty much the same. At this point, you have a choice to make: continue your save file or start a new game. If you’re really attached to your town like me, you can certainly continue. All new content will still be available to you, Nintendo has even added an automatic de-weeding in the update to save time in case you haven’t visited in a while. However, if you’d like a fresh start and your town is at least a level three, you can now sell your town to fund your new one! Simply choose the recreate town option from the main menu and Tom Nook will appraise your town. You can choose to have your funds delivered to you all at once, or over the course of 100 equal payments with 10% interest to boot! You can also choose to keep your catalog when you restart which will definitely come in handy.

Upon entering your town, you’ll get a mini tutorial about the new initiative system which rewards your daily activities with MEOW coupons. Initiatives can vary from simple tasks such as changing your hairstyle to catching a certain number of bugs or fish within a given time frame. Once you complete an initiative, you can cash them in for MEOW coupons and head over to the campground where you’ll meet Harvey, a laid back character with a love for feeding birds. He’ll even share his bird seed with you so you can join in.

Harvey sells unique items not found anywhere else in the game, which you can buy with your new MEOW coupons. However, when I first visited the campground, it was the RV beside Harvey which really drew my attention. Each day, a different character will visit the campground in the RV and you’ll be able to reunite with some old friends such as Pavé and Joan, each with their own set of tradable items. You can also use your Amiibo cards and figurines to ask specific villagers to visit, including three brand new villagers who you can invite to move in!

In addition to summoning villagers to the campground, you can also summon characters by talking to Wisp. Wisp will appear somewhere in your town soon after the update and when you bring him to your house, he will offer to possess the likeness of a particular character for you. Simply tap your Amiibo figurines or cards to your 3DS to summon a character. You can then ask them to gift you with an item or invite them to move into your town, even if you’ve already had that character previously. What’s that you say? You already have ten villagers? Never fear! In an unprecedented turn of events, you can now select a villager to evict in order to invite your new one in! Speaking of moving in, there have also been reports that villagers will no longer move in on top of QR code paths, however this has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo.

They’ve added a new secret storeroom to the list of house expansions available from Tom Nook. This new room is especially useful for hoarders like myself who find their storage units overflowing with furniture and clothes. In order to unlock the storeroom, you must have built the second floor of your house and paid off your loan. Talk to Tom Nook as usual, and after selecting the expand option you should be able to select the storeroom. Once you have that, you’ll also unlock the Happy Home Designer interface for organizing your house!

As if all this wasn’t enough, they’ve also added an Amiibo camera which lets you take real world pictures with Amiibo characters. You can also now sit on rocks, shake trees while holding a tool, and get new fortune cookie rewards including a Wii U and a 3DS console for your house each with their own mini game!

Get ready to fall in love with your town all over again – or relish the feel of your old town financing your new one! There’s something for everyone in Animal Crossing New Leaf: Welcome Amiibo!

Mini-Review: FFXIV All Saints’ Wake Event

The All Saint’s Wake Festival is here, and this year Square-Enix has gone above and beyond! Head over to the Mih Khetto's Amphitheater in Old Gridania to join the Continental Circus. The circus is planning a haunted manor for this All Saints’ Wake, but the Adventurer’s Guild Investigator senses something is amiss. He asks you to volunteer to help with the event in hopes that you’ll be able to observe the circus performers more closely and report back any mischief. For your first task, travel to each city-state to gather a particular material needed for the haunted manor. Tasks like this are pretty standard for any FFXIV event, and while it sometimes can feel tedious to have to teleport around to so many locations, the quirky cutscenes at each definitely make up for it.

Where this event differs from previous seasonal events is that there is actually an instance within the event! Once you gather all the necessary materials, you actually get to go inside the haunted manor! This part of the event is initiated the same way you would a dungeon. Talk to the harlequin guide in either the amphitheater or the Acorn Orchard to queue for the instance. You’ll have a standard light party and there are no class or level requirements in order to join.

When your party enters, you’ll be given a set of tasks to perform, each requiring you to locate certain items within the manor. There are enemies wandering around who will aggro you, but being spotted does not initiate a fight. Instead, you’ll find yourself magically transformed into a pumpkin for a few seconds if you cross an enemy’s path. This will lower your party’s sanity meter, which replaces the hp in a sense. Upon completion of the instance, you’ll receive a special seasonal clothing item, but there are other rewards such as a minion that you can find as well.

All in all, the instance is a lot of fun and definitely worth participating in. The addition of an instance to a seasonal event was definitely a welcome surprise, and I can’t wait to see what Square thinks up for the next event!

They hooked us on all the feelings

By Jim Scroggs
October 21, 2016

Visually Stunning. Those are the two words that came to mind when I first saw the new teaser trailer for Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I don't think that anyone lost an ounce of confidence in James Gunn, Chris Pratt, Zoey Saldana and the rest of those involved in Guardians while the movie was in production and I don't think it's possible to be more excited for this film now. The sounds of Blue Swede’s "Hooked on a Feeling" echo throughout the 90 second clip and it's probably the best use of that song since the Dancing Baby episode of Ally McBeal. (Kid's, ask your parents or an older family member about that) The first shots are of a circular corridor, someone altering a warning message for space suits in a very Guardians like way and well as some body shots of Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax. Once the music swells some, We see Gamora pull her sword and running toward something as well as making a Wonder Woman like leap to attack (Yes, I know, wrong universe), Rocket and Yandu walking slowly as bodies rain from above, possibly because of an upset Groot, which sounds very similar to what was shown at SDCC in the summer. Nebula makes an appearance and her face looks different because I noticed the lack of blue in the middle part of her face so maybe that could be a change to her storyline in this film. There's an aerial shot of some characters coming toward the camera and slowing down at the last second, which is just eye candy and goes in the visually stunning category I mentioned earlier. The only dialogue we hear is from Drax as he tries to wax poetic on the differences between Peter Quill and Gamora. He goes on to say that there are 2 people in the universe, those who dance and those who don't. You can probably guess which of the two characters belong in each category and tells Peter he needs to find a woman who's "pathetic" like him. When Drax offers a hug, Quill declines but Drax does it anyway because why wouldn't he. But the cherry on the top of this Space Opera sundae is the shot of Rocket after shooting a hole through something and then Baby Groot appears on his back and peeks his head up. He makes the most adorable sound I can possibly think of and smiles.
While this is was a taste of what’s to come, I can’t imagine what a full blown trailer will look like for this film. The expectations should be through the roof since the lack of Thanos and an Infinity Stone should keep this a self contained story just about the Guardians and that is extremely exciting for myself and fans around the world.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5th, 2017.

Review: Rise of the Tomb Raider

“What makes someone reach beyond the boundaries of human experience to face the unknown?” These opening words set the stage for the incredible journey you are about to embark on in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Released last November as a timed Xbox exclusive, but now available on PC and PlayStation 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider finds Lara Croft once again at odds with a madman and his army as she struggles to locate an ancient artifact said to have mystical healing properties. Players will notice a slight shift in tone from the last game, with a more explorer related feel than the previous survival-focused gameplay, however this shift feels natural as Lara fully embraces her destiny as a tomb raider and follows in her father’s footsteps as she journeys to the frozen mountains of Siberia.

One of the greatest additions to the game are Lara’s new crafting abilities. In addition to the salvage used in the first game to upgrade your weapons, Lara now has the ability to craft her own ammo and gear along with other useful items such as health packs. This is exceptionally useful in battle as you can now craft ammo on the run and heal yourself if you get too severely wounded in battle. One of my personal favorite craftable items are poison arrows which temporarily paralyze larger enemies allowing Lara a short unhindered timeframe to fire at will. The poison also kills many of the smaller enemies, such as wolves, as the smoke cloud disperses around the impact zone affecting everything in the immediate vicinity.

Hunting becomes exceptionally important in Rise of the Tomb Raider, as Lara will need to gather resources from specific animals in order to craft certain items. New animals such as bears, leopards, and wild boars have been added to the map, each with its own traits and attack style. It’s no longer a simple matter of hiding in trees, Lara will have to devise clever plots in order to lure certain animals out of their lairs. Animals are also less numerous, adding to the challenge of the hunt. I personally love hunting in the mountain peak area. The peace and serenity of the snowy forest provides the perfect calming atmosphere to hunt in. However, there ae several prime hunting locations on the map – and let me assure you, there is nothing quite like the rush of terror that fills you when you hear a snow leopard for the first time.

Another awesome addition to this game are Lara’s translating skills. In the first Tomb Raider remake, Lara already knew how to read most of the kanji found on the relics and artifacts she gathered. This time Lara learns as she goes, gaining knowledge in various languages from Greek to Mongolian. Exploring tombs and caves now awards Lara with codexes containing plans for ancient weapons Lara can use on her journey. The addition of murals and monoliths adds yet another dimension of exploration as Lara will sometimes have to search out objects to increase her knowledge of a particular language before she can proceed. As in the previous game, the map is filled with documents and relics which amplify the story and give life to every location Lara visits. Each series has its own mini story, weaving together to add an additional layer of mystery of the Prophet and his Divine Source. The story takes many twists and turns along the way, keeping you on your toes the entire time. NPCs also feature new mini mission side quests which can be used to increase your gear and standing with the natives.

All in all, Square-Enix and Crystal Dynamics have once again created an amazing game that is sure to have you coming back again and again. No matter what you’re looking for, action or shooter, mystery or collector, you’ll find it in the diverse landscape and characters of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Get Ready With Me: Edna Mode

We’ve all been there, you have this huge list of cosplays and no idea which to do next. It doesn’t matter if you’re just getting into cosplay, or you’ve been cosplaying for years, there are always more cosplays on your list than what you’re able to do. I know I have about thirty cosplays on my dream list, and every year more and more are added before I even get finished with the ones already there. So how do you go about picking which cosplay to do next? I know that for myself, it can simply come down to cost and the required prep time. In a perfect world I would love to be able to do a couple new cosplays at each convention I go to, but usually I have to limit myself to one or two new cosplays total per year. So, with this in mind, let me give you a little insight into my process of picking a cosplay and going about making it.

I don’t know that there is necessarily a precise method I use to pick which cosplay I want to do next. It has a lot to do with what fandom I’m really fangirling about at the time. There are so many cosplays on my to do list; the idea for a cosplay can come from anywhere. Usually, while at a convention, I will think of several new cosplays to do before I even leave the con. However, these cosplays are usually inspired by other cosplays and fandoms I see at the convention, and when I get home the urge to make them dwindles as they are not from fandoms I am currently really excited about. For example, one year I saw this spectacular Demona cosplay from Gargoyles and it really inspired me to do my own version of Demona or Puck, both of whom are characters I really love from the show. But while I love Gargoyles, it is not a show I have actively watched for several years. So although I did add the cosplay to my future cosplay list, it got pushed to the back in favor of fandoms I am currently obsessing over. Also, often my friends and I will think of groups we would like to do such as a Final Fantasy XIV group with each of our character’s main class, a Zelda group, a Harvest Moon group, and an old men group (which consisted of random old guys from different animes or games such as Bugenhagen from Final Fantasy VII and Master Roshi from Dragon Ball Z). Now, as amazing as these cosplay group ideas are, a lot of the time these groups seem to get lost in the list of cosplays simply because certain cosplays in that group would take a lot more work than others. Therefore it would be difficult to organize when we could all have them done at the same time. And again, they are influenced by what we see at the con, so when we get home the urge to actually do them dwindles.

So, how do you go about picking one cosplay from a list of thirty possibilities? Well, a lot of the time a certain cosplay will just suddenly resonate with me and I am overcome with a desire to make it. This year, that cosplay is Edna Mode from The Incredibles. I’m not sure when the idea first came to me, but ever since it popped into my mind it has been all I can think about cosplay-wise. I think the idea partly came because so many of my friends have started making superhero cosplays to wear to our volunteer events, and I couldn’t really think of a superhero I would want to cosplay myself. However, the idea of running around after my friends yelling at them for wearing capes was too good to pass up. And thus, my Edna Mode cosplay journey began!

My first step in making this cosplay was deciding what pieces I would need to buy and what I could make myself. I always try to make things myself as much as possible. There’s just something extra in the joy and pride I get knowing I made it myself. However, I unfortunately cannot sew. So if a cosplay requires something I cannot crochet or piece together from other things, I have to commission it. I do intend to eventually learn how to sew as it would be nice to be able to make all my own cosplays from scratch. However, I am afraid of needles, so learning that skill keeps being pushed down on my to-do list. Also, there is no shame is commissioning someone to make your cosplay, props, or anything in between. It doesn’t matter if your cosplay is handmade by you, pieced together from other articles clothing, or commissioned. As long as you’re happy with the cosplay, that’s all that matters.

With that said, if you do find yourself needing to get a cosplay commissioned, there are a few things to keep in mind. If the cosplay is something that will be made to order, remember to give yourself at least three months’ time for it to get to you. Take a good look at the seller’s estimated shipping time frame and how far the item will have to travel. There’s nothing worse than missing out on wearing a cosplay because it didn’t arrive in time. Also, measurements, measurements, measurements! Whenever possible, try and give as many measurements as possible to ensure your item fits properly. For example, I am 5’1” and so often I have to emphasize my height on my measurement sheet because if I don’t, I end up with a dress that pools on the floor that I have to then go get altered again so I don’t fall and kill myself. Everyone is shaped differently, so keep in mind (especially if ordering from another country) the seller cannot actually see you and therefore the more measurements you have, the better idea they have to go off of. I would also recommend that you never try and do your own measurements. There are just too many factors to try and do it yourself, so ask a friend to help you. It is also a good idea to check reviews thoroughly before you commission something from a seller for the first time.

Ask any cosplayer, and they can tell you a horror story about commissioning something that ends up arriving looking nothing like what was described. For me, it was when I ordered my Elsa cosplay. It was right after the release of the movie and while there were a few ice dresses listed on websites, I could only find one coronation dress listing. There were no pictures listed, which I led to believe meant mine would be the first dress they were making. I sent my measurements as usual, but when the dress arrived, I had serious questions whether they had even looked at my measurements. The dress was made out of a satin like material that wasn’t remotely accurate, but that didn’t bother me as much as the fact that it seemed to be three sizes too large. The dress literally fell off of me. The black shirt to go under the dress was not a full shirt and barely covered my chest. This meant every time I raised my arms, the shirt would come out from under the dress. The first time I wore it, we literally pinned the shirt to the dress. The only saving grace was the embroidery on the dress and cape. I absolutely loved the intricate stitching and it is the only reason I kept the cosplay. Well, that and the fact that the seller wasn’t willing to pay for the return shipping. After considerable alterations, my Elsa dress now fits very well. I bought a new shirt to wear with it, and the seamstress I took it to was able to hem it from the waist which prevented me from losing the intricate stitching I loved so much.

Anyway, to get back on topic, there wasn’t too much for my Edna Mode cosplay that I had to buy. Basically everything for the outfit except for the sleeves could be pieced together from clothes/shoes I already had, and I had already decided to crochet the sleeves myself. That only left the wig and the glasses. When searching for items online, my two best friends are Amazon and Etsy. I sometimes get things from Ebay, but I have found that the quality of products on Etsy is much better and often nearly the same prices. And as far as Amazon goes, that two day free Prime shipping is always a good thing when it comes crunch time before a con. When searching for a wig, a lot of the same rules apply as for commissions. Take a close look at the pictures of the wig in question, make sure that the wig is going to be thick enough to hide your hair underneath. Also look at reviews for the seller, and if possible the wig in question. Make sure the wig is of a high enough quality you’ll be able to maintain it. It doesn’t matter how pretty the wig looks if the material gets overly tangled with the slightest movement. Also, don’t feel you have to spend an arm and a leg to get a decent wig. A nice rule of thumb for wigs is $30 - $50. Unless you’re purchasing a highly specific wig that requires lots of styling or is excessively long, $50 is plenty to get a nice wig that you can wear over and over again with proper maintenance. If you’re not sure, ask your fellow cosplayers! Everyone has a favorite shop or store they like to get their wigs from and most cosplayers are more than happy to share where they find the best deals. For this particular cosplay, I found my wig on Etsy for $40. My glasses came from Amazon.

The last piece of the cosplay I needed were the sleeves. In the movie, Edna Mode appears to be wearing a vinyl dress with scale-like diamond patterned sleeves. I debated for a while on how best to achieve this look. Several of my fellow cosplayers recommended I cut the diamonds from foam and glue them onto a shirt. And while this option would probably be the most accurate, I also wanted something that would be comfortable and easy to maneuver in. Then I started thinking about how I could crochet something to look like that and the answer came to me: crocodile stitching. I had to alter the stitch just a bit to get the points for the diamonds, but all in all I was extremely pleased with the result. You can click here to see a tutorial I made for this stitch. To attach the sleeves to my cosplay, my original thought was to crochet them onto a tank top. However, we soon discovered the sleeves were just too heavy to attach in that manner. So this left me with a bit of a problem. I didn’t want to have to crochet an entire dress as I had never undertaken a project that extensive, but it looked like that was exactly what I would have to do. Also, as I had already made the sleeves, it would be difficult to follow a pattern and have everything match up. I ended up freehand crocheting the front and back pieces, holding them up to me every so often to ensure it would fit, and sewing them together afterwards. I added a back loops only row every so often to get the ribbed look and then crocheted the sleeves on at the end. When I was finished, I was extremely pleased with the result. Not only had I conquered a new skill, but I had succeeded in making something that was both comfortable and accurate – something every cosplayer struggles with.

Once all the pieces were aligned, the only thing left was to figure out how to do my makeup to complete the look. Edna has a natural look, so I chose eyeshadow and lip colors that would hold up well during the course of the day and accentuate my eyes – which are my favorite feature of my face – without being too overwhelming or exuberant. Whenever I go to conventions, I always carry a small pouch with lip color, eyeshadow, and powder just in case I need to touch anything up during the day. Remember that most cosplays can get pretty warm, so your makeup will sweat off if you’re not careful. It is also always a good idea to carry a water bottle with you. Most conventions are pretty good about having water stations around to help keep everyone hydrated, but trust me when I say you do not want to risk getting heat exhaustion. Having to be torn from your cosplay because you got too hot sort of ruins things for everyone, and I speak from experience on that. You’ll also probably want to carry around some simple things to fix your cosplay should you have any malfunctions. I usually have super glue, safety pins, and band aids on me, however there is also usually a booth for cosplay repair and first aid if you do not have an easy way to carry these things around with you or if you need a more serious repair.

Last but not least, I always like to get into the mindset of the character I will be cosplaying as. Not only does this help you with thinking of poses for pictures, knowing their mannerisms and speech patterns will set you apart from other cosplayers, and will make the experience one to remember for a lifetime – especially when children are involved. To a child, you are not a cosplayer portraying a character, you are that character. So if you choose to cosplay someone that children identify with such as a Disney Princess, always remember to act as that character would act. And trust me when I say, there is nothing like talking to a child in cosplay. Seeing their favorite character makes their entire world and you’ll feel honored to have brought them that joy.

With all that said, when it came time to actually wear my cosplay, I didn’t take into consideration just how many people would be at the convention. When I was planning things out I knew it would be warm, but I thought the holes in the sleeves between the crocodile stitching would provide enough of a breeze to keep me from overheating too much. I was wrong. I underestimated the fact that inside the dealer’s room and the packed halls of the convention center, there was no room for air to get to me. Therefore, I had no breeze. I wore my cosplay a grand total of three hours before I gave up. It was just too hot. As I said, I have learned from experience what it feels like to have to be torn from your cosplay and I really didn’t want to get heat exhaustion again. I was fine once we got outside into the open air, so I’m thinking this cosplay will have to be limited to outdoor events only.

And that, I suppose, is my last tip. Make sure you know your limits. Cosplay is meant to be fun. Trust me when I say you do not want to be that person who spends hours working on their cosplay only to wake up to someone cutting it off of them because they passed out after getting too hot. It’s not worth it. Also keep in mind that there is no walking like con walking. Be sure you wear shoes that are going to be comfortable as you will most likely be on your feet for hours, especially if your cosplay prevents you from easily sitting down. You can always bring different shoes for photoshoots if you need to. Don’t be afraid to wear your cosplay the way you want to. The nice thing about cosplay is there are basically no rules except have fun and be respectful of others. So get out there and experiment!
